On September 13, 2011, the Chancellor of the University System of Maryland, Brit Kirwan, announced that the University of Maryland’s Basketball court in the Comcast Center would be renamed Gary Williams court.

Naming a court after anyone should reflect that individual’s commitment not just to excellence in sports but to the ideals of the University.

On every count, from sports to academics this decision is fundamentally flawed.

This decision reflects everything that is wrong in collegiate athletics.

It was a total sell out:

• The Academic Sell Out: Williams’ teams had among the worst graduation rates in all of NCAA Division I basketball.
• The Cash Money Sell Out: Money drove the renaming decision.
• The Short Sale Sell Out: This back room deal sells Maryland short.
• The Basketball Tradition Sell Out: Williams’ basketball record doesn’t justify renaming the court.
• The Women’s Athletics Sell Out: The Lady Terps should be outraged.
• The Good Governance Sell Out: A decision of this magnitude should be voted on by the Board of Regents.
• The Values Sell Out: This deal doesn’t stand for what Terps stand for.
• The Gary Williams Sell Out: Williams already has a sweetheart parting deal.
• The Maryland Sell Out: Maryland’s court should be Maryland’s court, no one else’s.

We bear no grudge against Coach Williams, in fact, as a rule we think he is a fine individual. We just think this decision to rename the court for the reasons it is being done is profoundly wrong and so we are speaking up.
